We describe new experimental productivity dispersion statistics, Dispersion Statistics on Productivity (DiSP), jointly produced by the Bureau of Labor (BLS) and Census Bureau, that complement official BLS industry-level statistics. The has a long history producing which represent average establishment-level within industries when appropriately weighted. These statistics cannot, however, tell us about variation in levels across establishments those industries. businesses can provide information nature competition frictions sectors sources rising wage inequality businesses. DiSP data show enormous differences manufacturing sector. find substantial industries, increasing from 1997 to 2016, countercyclical total factor dispersion. hope will enable further research into understanding over time.
